"A Titanic Debacle"

As I have stated many times on Dark Side Rumors, I do, in fact, have something against Titanic. I think that it was a great movie and worthy of praise, but there are times when praise goes too far and delves into regions of obsession.

My number one objection to Titanic is not that it beat Star Wars at the box office, to claim the number one spot of all time--because, as most Star Wars fans conveniently forget, Star Wars only held that spot for a little less than a year. My number one objection is the fact that Titanic was a fad. Any of my friends can tell you that I am deeply and fully against fads of any type, which is why I truly dread the popularity that Star Wars will show when Episode One is released.

When I started seeing Titanic tee-shirts and pencils popping up in stores--and not only popping up in stores, but being sold out in stores--something inside of me just yelled. Recently, I got my new copy of the Star Wars Insider, and, as I was flipping through, came to the Jawa Trader section. Many of you know that section, and know it well. I started laughing when I saw the first page, featuring Star Wars pillow cases, blankets, backpacks and tee-shirts. But after that initial laugh I can never laugh at that again. It kind of sickens me, just like the Titanic tee-shirts. The first thing I think is that the tee-shirts truly are ugly, and the second thing that I think is that no matter how ugly they are, people will still buy them!

This is something that I only understand as obsession. I have spoken with people on the internet who say that they will see Episode One as many times as they can, in hopes of beating Titanic's record. The sad part is that I believe these people will do just that. What if the movie is bad, I ask? My own thoughts answer me: They will still watch is dozens of times. If you make it, they will watch it.

My one hope for Episode One is that it will not be what we expected, but ten times better. My only other hope is that Lucas will not hire someone like Celene Dion to sing a song for Episode One ("My Force will go on"), because I heard the Titanic song everyday for five months, and I know that most of you out there are sick of it. Titanic was an excellant movie, but people just take things too far sometimes (it did not deserve Best Picture, as everyone knows, and it did not deserve pencils and tee-shirts). Star Wars was an excellant movie, the trilogy an excellant trilogy. Just remember, folks, that Episodes One, Two and Three will only be movies. In psychology they call this a secondary drive. Your primary drives should always be physiological-- food, water, etc. As much as I like Star Wars I also like to call myself moderate, and so should you.
